Dear Partners & Collaborators,

I have straddled two worlds my entire life. All of who I am, my passion, my purpose, my values, are deeply rooted in a world built on the foundation of Liberian customs, and collective ways of being. This world taught me the importance of creating space for others and the value of community. This world emphasized education as a tool in one’s liberation. This world nurtured my identity as a Liberian woman, while also fostering my identity as a black American.

The second world, given to me by birthright, is built on a foundation of division and difference. This world often does not acknowledge my identity and experience as a Liberian American woman. Growing up and being formally educated in the Twin Cities, I quickly learned that my truth did not matter, or merely did not exist. I would later come to understand that the broader world systematically works to diminish, invalidate or speak on behalf of individuals with narratives similar to mine.

Being the daughter of immigrant parents, I continue to straddle my two worlds now with a collection of experiences that have given me the strength to actively stand against unjust power, speak my truth and encourage all, especially individuals with similar narratives, to do the same.

There is power in understanding how systems work for or against you. Only with that knowledge can you work to disrupt systemic inequity. I seek partnership with all who understand the need for diverse voice, create space for BIPOC individuals to seek justice, and take dynamic action toward dynamic change.
